Kiln & Co

A collective of nine ceramicists publishes one catalogue a year. We designed a format that gives every maker the same amount of space and lets the pieces speak in their own dark, earthy colours.

The challenge

The collective had grown from three to nine makers, and the old catalogue had become a fight for pages. Some makers had professional photos, others had none. The catalogue also had to work as a price list for galleries, which meant a lot of small text that nobody wanted to look at.

The approach

Every maker gets exactly eight pages: one portrait, one statement, six pieces. We photographed all of it ourselves in two days, against the same dark backdrop, so the book reads as one collection. Prices and dimensions moved to a separate folded sheet tucked into the back cover.

The outcome

The catalogue was shortlisted at the European Design Awards, and galleries now order it in boxes of twenty. Because the format is fixed, the collective produces each new edition with their own editor, using the templates we left behind.

Calm, precise and honest about what would not work.
